I was completely blown away by the headlines on several news channels this week “Watch out parents: State may want to take away your obese kids.” I heard this the first time and kinda wandered away from the chatter then collected my thoughts, tuned in more intently and said What? Really? The US government contemplating taking obese children away from parents.
The Journal of American Medical Association says taking kids away from their parents and putting them in foster care temporarily is more ethical than obese surgery. Yeah, if you have to choose between those two! But who wants the state to take your kid away?
Dr David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Harvard affiliated Childrens Hospital Boston, said the point isn’t to blame parents, but rather act in the childrens best interest and get them help for whatever reason their parents cant provide.
State intervention “ideally will support not just the child but the whole family, with uniting the family as soon as possible as the main goal. That may require instruction on parenting” said Ludwig, who wrote the article with Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and researcher at Harvards School of Public Health.
“Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child” Mutagh said.
I can see the concern for a child that is obese. I can see the Doctors being concerned the child may have or develop diabetes, have respiratory problems or have joint or structural challenges. But to have those children taken away from their parents by the government and placed in foster care and placed on a government diet regimen for a year or two away from their birth parents, too overreaching, absurd? Is taking away the child from a family and placing them in foster care the right and best thing for the child? I have to say that separation from the parents has got to be more traumatic than the child being obese. Then when the child returns home and starts to gain that weight back, do they take them away again and place them in a fat camp again.
Who makes the determination that my child is obese? I have to be more concerned about the government wrecking families than in favor of a thinner child, where is the line drawn?
There is also the economic factors with many of these obese children. The ability to just survive in todays world requires a lot more money to eat healthy and often families fix a “quick and cheap” meal just to survive. It may be a bologna sandwich and a bowl of macaroni and cheese on the table for some out of necessity. Some are often caught up in a vicious circle.
Do I spend every last dime on these veggies to feed them perhaps for a meal or do I feed all my kids for several days on much cheaper meal choices. Sadly the latter is the case. But to have my kids taken away for making a necessary survival choice only to have the state step in and take my child away, that is the real tragedy.
Some may say that the reason we are making these poor food choices is because of the strains the government is putting on the families of America and forcing them to tighten the purse strings. That could be an opposite argument!
We are seeing America at its worst! We are continuing to sleep as the government giants whittle away at our personal freedoms. Our light bulb choices, our guns taken away, our homes, our property…………our children! And we are not outraged yet? What will it take for us to wake up. Would you give your child to the state? Where does it stop?
If the state taking your child away in a government vehicle for being obese doesn’t get you fired up, I am convinced nothing will……….except maybe Dancing With the Stars or the Kaylee Anthony case………now that I have your attention, your child just left with that well dressed gentlemen in a black suit carrying a dietary supplement headed to fat camp. Sorry!
